James serves as principal clarinet of the Auckland Youth Orchestra and has been a member of the orchestra since 2012.
He is also a casual player with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and has performed as a soloist with the Aotea Youth Symphony and as principal clarinet with the Orchestre de Sciences Po in Paris.
In 2016, James was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music.
