Tribute to Robert Issell…

Robert Issell (1938-2017) achieved great heights in the international orchestral world.  Not only was he the Concertmaster of the Symphonia of Auckland (a forerunner of the current APO) in the 70s, but he was also a permanent 1st violinist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London for many years – a position eagerly sought by many professional violinists.

When he eventually returned to NZ in the 90s, Robert continued his musical life. From about 2000-2010, Robert generously gave a great deal of his time in tutoring the violin sections of the Auckland Youth Orchestra, becoming a valuable support to our Music Director, Antun Poljanich.

We extend our sympathies to his family. Robert will be remembered with appreciation by AYO.
